Many adults report taking weight Loss pills and diet supplements. But are diet pills a proven method for getting rid of those areas of stubborn fat that resist diet and exercise?
Weight Loss Pills and Diet Supplements
Whether you want to drop 40 lbs, or just get rid of the stubborn fat pockets that cling to your hips, weight loss supplements or diet pills are a popular route. More than 20% of American women report using pills or supplements to lose weight.
Over the counter weight loss supplements and diet pills:
Over the counter weight loss drugs and supplements claim to work by either reducing your appetite, increasing your body’s rate of fat burning, or reducing your body’s absorption of fat.
The 11 most popular Weight Loss supplements are:
- Garcinia Cambogia Extract
- Hydroxycut
- Caffeine
- Raspberry Ketones
- Green Coffee Bean Extract
- Glucomannan
- Meratrim
- Green Tea Extract
- Conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA,
- Forskolin
- Bitter Orange / Synephrine
When tested against scientific standards of proof, these popular weight loss drugs were largely disappointing, with the majority proven to be ineffective, producing results no more favorable than those from taking a placebo. Furthermore, supplements are not strictly regulated and can cause harmful side effects.
The Bottom Line: Whether you have a lot or a little fat you want to get rid of…especially if it’s fat that won’t seem to go away no matter how much you exercise, OTC diet pills and weight loss supplements are probably not the solution.
Prescription Weight Loss Pills
The best weight loss pills, ones with clinical evidence supporting their efficiency, are usually only available through a doctor’s prescription. The most comon prescription weight loss pills are:
- Orlistat (Xenical)
- Belviq
- Contrave
- Saxendra
- Phentermine
- Qysmia
With the exception of Orlistat (Xenical) (which blocks your body from absorbing fat from the food you eat) prescription weight loss drugs are anorexiants, or appetite suppressers. Prescription weight loss pills are clinically proven to help certain individuals lose 5% to 10% of their body weight and decrease health conditions associated with being overweight such as cholesterol and blood pressure.
Are Prescription Weight Loss Pills Right for You?
If you are struggling to get rid of those last few pounds or a pooch of stubborn belly fat, prescription weight loss drugs is probably not the solution for you. Doctors will only prescribe diet pills to adults with a BMI of 30 or higher. Medical professionals may consider men and women who are overweight with a BMI of 27 or higher, if accompanied with co-morbid health concerns such as diabetes or high cholesterol.
The Bottom Line: You can’t take a pill to get rid of those stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise.
