Dr. Dieter Manstein, an assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School, is among 2014`s “influencers of the year,” according to Allure magazine. Dr. Manstein is being lauded for his role in discovering the revolutionary fat reduction procedure that Allure magazine dubbed “non-invasive liposuction.”
Dr Manstein’s non-invasive fat reduction procedure is called CoolSculpting, and it has been insanely popular, with more than a million procedures performed, since its clearance by the FDA as a safe and effective way to reduce fat around the midsection. CoolSculpting is based on the science known as cryolipolysis. Clinical research has demonstrated that during a CoolSculpting procedure, controlled cooling is applied to an area of the body. The cooling safely passes through the skin and surrounding tissue and penetrates the fatty tissue beneath. Some of the fat is then frozen, effectively destroying those fat cells, which are gradually picked up by the body’s natural healing process and secreted out of the body as waste.
Allure quotes Dr. Manstein as he describes the thought that lead to this medical breakthrough. “Fat freezes at a higher temperature than water. Think of butter and water in the refrigerator – one is solid, the other remains liquid.” Allure magazine explains the significance of this observation “In other words, [Dr. Manstein] realized he could freeze an amount of fat, which would destroy fat cells but do no harm to the overlying tissue.”

Dr. Manstein’s procedure has made invasive fat reduction surgeries, such as liposuction, seem archaic and almost barbaric in comparison to Coolsculpting, which requires no scalpels, no stitches, and usually no downtime. CoolSculpting has been clinically shown to be very effective, in some cases reducing an inch of fat around the waistline in a single, one hour, treatment.*
