Beauty writer Emily Gregor at DivineCaroline talked to NYC dermatologist Dr. Hadley King at SKINNEY Medspa, for advice on anti aging skin care for men and women in their 20s, in her article “The 20-Something Guide to Anti-Aging Products”
Most adults in their 20s have yet to experience the collagen loss or environmental effects that accompany the first signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation conditions, or loose and sagging skin. So why should young adults concern themselves with anti aging skin care? According to DivineCaroline “the earlier you start preventing the signs of aging, the better your skin will look when you are older.” So following the strategy that “the best defense is a good defense” Dr. Hadley King offers young adults some great advice to maintain their radiant, youthful skin well into their 30s, 40s, and 50s.
Many people might be surprised that skin care experts estimate that 90% of premature aging is a result of lifestyle choices. Often times the choices that lead to the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines that begin to show in the 30s and 40s, were made decades before when the adult was in their youth. So what should women and women in their 20s be aware of when it comes to the health and longevity of their skin? Dr. Hadley King tells Divine Caroline that:
“Sun protection is the single most important thing you can do to prevent aging. And don’t smoke.”

Besides avoiding the 2 cardinal sins of anti aging skin care, sun exposure and smoking, DivineCaroline asks Dr. Hadley King to refer a skincare product that would be ideal for young adults. But Dr. King further emphasized the impact sun exposure has on premature aging by listing:
“Sunblock is the most helpful product because it helps protect your skin from UV rays.”
An easy way to incorporate sun protection into your daily skin care regime is by using a facial moisturizer and makeup infused with a broadband sunscreen with at least 45 SPF.

For young adults wanting to also be proactive with anti aging skin care, Dr. Hadley King recomends
“a night cream containing a retinoid to increase collagen and the turnover of the skin cells.”
Dr. Hadley King notes that once in your 30s men and women may consider combating the first signs of aging:
”with options such as neuromodulators, chemical peels, laser and light facials and dermal fillers.”
Why is it important to start an anti aging skin care routine in your 20s?
While anti aging skin care in your 20s may seem like jumping the gun a little, Dr. Hadley King explains that :
“It is important to focus on prevention and to form healthy skincare habits that will last a lifetime.”
So the take away lesson is:
“protect your skin from the sun and use a retinoid-containing night cream. Continue these practices in your 30s.”
