The Best Concealer for Acne or Bad Skin Care?

A makeup video showing a spectacular makeup before and after on a woman suffering from severe acne has gone viral, sparking both acclaim and criticism. The video featuring makeup artist, Carla Moran (@carlabeauty) was posted to Instagram by Lilly Ghalichi, former star of Shahs of Sunset. While the transformation is undeniable some critics question whether covering up acne with foundation is a recomendable skincare practice.

To help solve the debate, beauty writer for Lipstick, Glamour magazine’s online style and beauty platform, Beth Shapouri, “turned to expert dermatologist, Hadley King, M.D., of SKINNEY Medspa,” for coment on the makeup video and “to break down if there’s anything to worry about here.”

The Lipstick article, Why This Viral Acne Makeup Tutorial Is Sparking a Ton of Debate, summarizes this debate saying “there seems to be a ton of confusion about what’s actually healthy to wear on top of skin that’s broken out, with some viewers wondering whether thick layers of makeup could cause more trouble than it’s worth.”

Shapouri shares the “good news. When it comes to acne, generally it’s OK to wear makeup as long as you pick the right stuff.” But cautions, “be extra careful to choose formulas labeled oil-free and noncomedogenic (meaning non-pore-clogging),” when shopping for the best concealer for acne.

The Best Concealer for Acne is Non-Comedogenic and Applied Lightly

Of course, even the best concealer for acne that is non-comedogenic requires light application. Shapouri lets Dr. Hadley King clarify this: “even products that are advertised as noncomedogenic can have the potential to clog pores and make acne worse when applied heavily.” So even when using the best concealer for acne, try to apply it using the “thinnest layer you can get away with.”

Beyond finding and lightly applying the best concealer for acne that your budget allows, Dr. King offers further advice for applying makeup to cover up acne. “Make sure you are using makeup that is fresh and clean—nothing expired or that smells funny—and no dirty brushes or sponges so that you aren’t spreading bacteria on the skin.”

The best way to ensure that your brush is clean and will not spread harmful bacteria into your acne is to wash your makeup brush. “Washing once per week should be adequate,” quotes the article. But if that is too high maintenance, disposable makeup brushes is another alternative to ensure you properly apply makeup over acne breakouts.

And of course, no article on proper acne skincare would be complete without a friendly admonition from a dermatologist to “never pick your acne.” Dr. Hadley King also counsels that the best concealer for acne and the best makeup tutorials is not meant to be a solution for acne. “If over-the-counter products containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide aren’t doing enough to clear up your acne, see a dermatologist so you can treat your acne instead of just covering it up.”
