Botox may be the name you immediately think of when you consider wrinkle-relaxing injections, but it is no longer your only option.

DAXXIFY is a newer neuromodulator that works on the same basic principle as Botox: temporarily reducing targeted muscle activity that contributes to expression lines. However, the two products are not identical. Their formulations differ, their FDA-approved aesthetic indications differ, and DAXXIFY has demonstrated a longer duration for glabellar lines in clinical studies than many patients may associate with traditional neuromodulator treatments.

So, does that make DAXXIFY better than Botox?

Not necessarily. It makes it different.

At SKINNEY Medspa, Dr. Carlos Rodriguez, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine physician, master aesthetic injector, Medical Director, and national trainer for Revance Therapeutics, and he provides advanced education on DAXXIFY and the RHA Collection of dermal fillers.

According to Dr. Rodriguez’s treatment philosophy, choosing a neuromodulator shouldn’t come down to which product is newest or which one your friend uses. Your facial anatomy, muscle strength, treatment areas, previous neurotoxin experience, and aesthetic goals should all factor into the decision.

Here is what you should know when comparing DAXXIFY vs. Botox.

Same Treatment Category. Different Formulations.

What Is the Difference Between DAXXIFY and Botox?

DAXXIFY and Botox are both neuromodulators made with botulinum toxin type A. When strategically injected into targeted muscles, they temporarily reduce muscle activity that contributes to certain expression lines.

That is why both can create a smoother, more refreshed appearance without adding facial volume.

The biggest differences involve their formulations, FDA-approved uses, dosing, and demonstrated duration.

DAXXIFY, or daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm, uses a proprietary 35-amino-acid peptide in its formulation. Unlike traditional neuromodulators, it contains no human serum albumin or animal-derived components. This peptide-based formulation distinguishes DAXXIFY from other currently available neuromodulators.

Botox, or onabotulinumtoxinA, has been used cosmetically in the United States for decades and received its first cosmetic FDA approval for moderate to severe frown lines in 2002.

Both can play valuable roles in aesthetic treatment. The question is which product and treatment plan make the most sense for your face.

DAXXIFY clinical trials reported onset as early as day one, typically within two days, and more than 50% of patients maintained none or mild frown lines at approximately six months. Botox’s current FDA-approved cosmetic indications include forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, and platysma bands.

Importantly, DAXXIFY units and Botox units are not interchangeable. Comparing the number of units used for one product with another does not provide a meaningful apples-to-apples comparison.

Understanding the Peptide-Powered Difference

What Makes DAXXIFY Different?

One of DAXXIFY’s defining characteristics is its formulation. DAXXIFY contains daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm along with a proprietary peptide called RTP004. The peptide functions as a stabilizing excipient in the formulation. DAXXIFY is also formulated without human serum albumin or animal-derived components.

From a patient’s perspective, however, one of the most interesting differences may be duration.

In the pivotal SAKURA clinical trials for glabellar lines, more than half of patients treated with DAXXIFY maintained none or mild frown lines for approximately 24 weeks. The median time until patients returned to their baseline wrinkle severity was approximately 26 to 28 weeks in the two pivotal trials.

That does not mean every DAXXIFY treatment lasts exactly six months.

Neuromodulator longevity can vary between individuals. Your muscle strength, metabolism, treatment area, dose, previous treatment history, and other individual factors can influence how long you notice your results.

If you want your neuromodulator to last longer, DAXXIFY may be worth discussing with an experienced injector.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox temporarily reduces muscle activity by blocking signals involved in muscle contraction.

When you repeatedly frown, squint, smile, or raise your eyebrows, certain facial muscles contract. Over time, those repetitive movements contribute to dynamic wrinkles.

Strategically treating selected muscles can reduce the strength of those contractions, making expression lines appear softer while the treatment is active.

The goal isn’t necessarily to eliminate all facial movement.

Dr. Rodriguez evaluates how individual muscles interact before determining placement and dosing. Your forehead, brows, and the muscles around your eyes don’t function independently. Treating one muscle group can influence the appearance and movement of another.

This is one reason injector experience matters as much as the product itself.

How Does DAXXIFY Work?

DAXXIFY also blocks acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, temporarily reducing activity in the injected muscle.

In other words, the overall treatment concept is similar to Botox: your injector places the neuromodulator into carefully selected muscles to reduce targeted movement.

The formulation is what sets DAXXIFY apart.

Its proprietary peptide stabilizes the active ingredient without human serum albumin. Clinical studies have also demonstrated the prolonged duration, which has become one of DAXXIFY’s most recognizable characteristics.

However, longer duration does not automatically mean that every patient should choose DAXXIFY.

The treatment area and desired outcome still matter.

Longevity Can Be a Major Deciding Factor

How Long Does DAXXIFY Last Compared to Botox?

This is one of the biggest reasons patients compare DAXXIFY vs. Botox.

DAXXIFY’s pivotal clinical studies showed prolonged improvement in moderate to severe glabellar lines. More than 50% of patients had none or mild frown lines at approximately 24 weeks, and the median time to return to baseline severity was about 26 to 28 weeks.

Botox treatments are generally spaced at least 90 days apart.

That difference may make DAXXIFY particularly interesting for patients who prioritize longer-lasting correction.

But there is an important tradeoff to understand.

A longer-lasting treatment also means you will live with the result longer.

This makes thoughtful dosing, placement, and patient selection especially important. Your injector should understand your facial anatomy and how much movement you would like to maintain before treatment begins.

Does DAXXIFY Work Faster Than Botox?

DAXXIFY can have a relatively fast onset.

In clinical trial patient diaries, patients reported improvement as early as the day after treatment and typically within two days.

That does not mean you should expect to see your final result the following morning.

Neuromodulator results continue developing after treatment, and individual response varies.

Rather than choosing a product solely because of how quickly it may begin working, Dr. Rodriguez considers onset alongside duration, anatomy, treatment area, and the type of result the patient wants.

Can DAXXIFY and Botox Treat the Same Areas?

This requires an important distinction between what neuromodulators can technically do and what each product is specifically FDA-approved to treat cosmetically.

DAXXIFY is FDA-approved for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe glabellar lines, commonly called the “11s” between the eyebrows, in adults.

Botox currently has broader FDA-approved cosmetic indications. It is approved to temporarily improve moderate to severe:

  • Glabellar or frown lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Platysma bands connecting the jaw and neck

Providers may use medications off-label when medically appropriate, but FDA-approved indications differ by product. Your injector should discuss the recommended treatment and whether a proposed use is on-label or off-label.

Will DAXXIFY or Botox Make My Face Look Frozen?

Neither product automatically creates a “frozen” appearance.

Neuromodulator results depend heavily on where the product is placed, how much is used, the strength of the targeted muscles, and how the surrounding muscles interact.

That is why two patients receiving the same product can have very different treatment plans.

Dr. Rodriguez does not approach neuromodulator treatment by simply injecting every visible wrinkle. He first evaluates facial movement and muscle relationships.

For one patient, the goal may be maintaining considerable expression while softening certain lines. Another may prefer stronger movement reduction in a specific area.

The product is only one part of that equation.

Choosing the Right Neuromodulator for Your Face

Is DAXXIFY Better Than Botox?

There is no universally “better” neuromodulator.

DAXXIFY may appeal to someone who values potentially longer-lasting results or wants to try its peptide-based formulation.

Botox may appeal to someone who has had consistently good results, prefers an established treatment they already know, or wants treatment in one of Botox’s additional FDA-approved aesthetic areas.

Your past experiences can matter, too.

If you have already used Botox or another neuromodulator, tell your provider:

  • Which product you received
  • Which areas were treated
  • How you liked the result
  • How quickly you noticed improvement
  • How long your results lasted
  • Whether you felt too much or too little movement remained
  • Whether there was anything you would change about your previous result

Those details give your injector useful information when designing your next treatment.

Who Might Consider DAXXIFY?

DAXXIFY may be worth discussing if you:

  • Want to soften moderate to severe frown lines between the brows
  • Are interested in a longer-lasting neuromodulator option
  • Prefer fewer treatment appointments when possible
  • Are curious about DAXXIFY’s peptide-based formulation
  • Have used other neuromodulators and want to explore another option

Your provider will still need to review your medical history and determine whether DAXXIFY is appropriate for you.

Who Might Prefer Botox?

Botox may be worth considering if you:

  • Have previously received Botox and like your results
  • Want an established neuromodulator with decades of cosmetic use
  • Are interested in treating FDA-approved areas such as forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, or platysma bands
  • Prefer the treatment schedule you already have with Botox
  • Have a treatment plan for which your injector recommends Botox

Again, these are not rigid categories. Your anatomy and treatment goals ultimately matter more than matching yourself to a checklist.

Expertise Matters as Much as the Injectable

Why Your Injector Matters When Choosing DAXXIFY vs. Botox

Patients often spend considerable time researching which neuromodulator to choose.

The product matters, but so does the person holding the syringe.

Successful neuromodulator treatment requires understanding facial anatomy, muscle movement, dosing, placement, symmetry, and how changing one muscle’s activity may affect another.

This becomes especially important with a longer-lasting neuromodulator. A longer-lasting treatment makes thoughtful planning from the start especially valuable.

DAXXIFY vs. Botox FAQs

Does DAXXIFY last longer than Botox?

DAXXIFY demonstrated prolonged results for glabellar lines in its pivotal clinical trials. More than half of patients maintained no or mild frown lines at approximately 24 weeks, with median return to baseline severity occurring around 26 to 28 weeks. Individual results and duration vary.

How quickly does DAXXIFY start working?

Clinical trial diary data showed that some patients noticed improvement as early as the day after DAXXIFY treatment, with onset typically occurring within two days. Individual response can vary.

Is DAXXIFY stronger than Botox?

“Stronger” is not a particularly useful way to compare the two products. DAXXIFY and Botox use different formulations and dosing systems, and their units cannot be directly compared. The appropriate product and dose depend on the treatment area, muscle activity, anatomy, and desired result.

Can I switch from Botox to DAXXIFY?

Patients who have previously received Botox may discuss DAXXIFY with their provider. Tell your injector when you last received a neuromodulator, which product was used, where it was injected, and how you responded so your provider can determine an appropriate treatment plan.

Is DAXXIFY just for frown lines?

DAXXIFY’s FDA-approved cosmetic indication is the temporary improvement of moderate to severe glabellar lines in adults. Providers may sometimes use prescription medications off-label when medically appropriate, but patients should understand the difference between FDA-approved and off-label uses.

Can DAXXIFY look natural?

Yes, neuromodulator treatment can be planned to maintain natural-looking facial expression. Results depend on factors including placement, dosing, muscle strength, anatomy, and how much movement you and your injector decide to preserve.

How often do you need DAXXIFY?

Treatment schedules are individualized. DAXXIFY has shown a prolonged duration in clinical studies, but that doesn’t mean every patient’s results will last exactly six months. Your provider can recommend retreatment when appropriate, based on your response and goals.
